A world first: Five Télécom ParisTech, mirSense and CentraleSupélec researchers open up a new era in the field of Photonics.

The very first observation of chaos in mid-infrared optical radiation has just been performed at Télécom ParisTech together with researchers from mirSense and CentraleSupélec.

This result makes a significant breakthrough for the photonic community working at these wavelengths. The discovery has just been published [1] in the journal Light: Sciences and Applications, published by Nature Publishing Group and classified as the second highest impact journal in optics by Thomson Reuters. Major industrial applications are expected in
the field of optical communications and sensing.

Five French researchers have recently demonstrated the emergence of chaotic optical dynamics at mid-infrared wavelengths (MIR). This world first is the result of a successful co-operation between Télécom ParisTech and CentraleSupélec (within Paris-Saclay University and in partnership with the University of Lorraine) and the start-up MirSense.

This study was performed by a CNRS PhD student at Télécom ParisTech, Louise Jumpertz, supervised by Frédéric Grillot, Télécom ParisTech, with assistance from Kevin Schires, Télécom ParisTech (laboratory LTCI [Laboratory for Information Processing and Communication], CNRS, Télécom ParisTech, Université Paris-Saclay]), Mathieu Carras, mirSense (start-up), and Marc Sciamanna, CentraleSupélec (laboratoire LMOPS [Laboratory of Optical Materials, Photonics and Systems], CentraleSupélec/University of Lorraine). This very first observation of chaos in quantum cascade lasers was made possible particularly through the expertise in quantum engineering developed in the spin-off mirSense.

Ecole Centrale Paris, Altran, Mazars and Société Générale announce the creation of the Open Innovation Institute (IOI).

Ecole Centrale Paris, Altran, Mazars and Société Générale announce the creation of the Open Innovation Institute (IOI).

The Open Innovation Institute will be responsible for helping large companies and start-ups to come together, encouraging and facilitating exchanges between these two worlds and developing synergies with the University’s students and laboratories. The Open Innovation Institute has been created in partnership with Altran, Mazars and Société Générale (founding members).

Open Innovation is a business model that has adapted its innovation strategy to make the most of its external environment. It consists, above all, of moving away from a vision and a culture where everything is done internally to incorporate collaboration with all stakeholders in its ecosystem: clients, suppliers, start-ups and sometimes competitors. Over the last ten years, it has acquired an important place in the innovation strategy of the highest performing companies.

Groupe des Ecoles Centrales - a major player in exchanges and cooperation with Latin America

Groupe des Ecoles Centrales - a major player in exchanges and cooperation with Latin America

Groupe des Ecoles Centrales (GEC), made up of the Ecoles Centrales of Paris, Lyon, Lille, Marseille and Nantes, is strongly committed to Latin America. In 2013, this involvement was confirmed through a high level of student mobility, academic exchanges and international university networks.

In 2013, GEC was number one for the mobility of engineering students between France and Brazil.

According to figures provided by the Conférence des directeurs des écoles françaises d’ingénieurs (an association of heads of French engineering schools), in the context of the BRAFITEC (Brazil France Technology Engineers) programme, GEC establishments received 30.8% of the total number of visiting students from Brazil on a dual diploma programme (120 placements). In addition, GEC sent 44.4% of the total number of French students who went to Brazil (36 placements).

Groupe des Ecoles Centrales is thus becoming the most important French player in the network of exchanges between France and Brazil for engineering science students.

Moreover, if we look at the overall number of students arriving or departing for placements within GEC institutions and our other Latin American partners, the totals are 17 for Argentina (ARFITEC programme), 31 for Chile (CHILFITEC programme) and 29 for Mexico (MEXFITEC programme).

This means that, in 2013, more than 230 students from Ecoles Centrales and their academic partners in Latin America were involved in student mobility programmes.

Centrale Paris, Supélec and Politecnico di Milano commit to enhance strategic cooperation

Centrale Paris, Supélec and Politecnico di Milano commit to enhance strategic cooperation

The three partners noted that the attractiveness of higher education institutions for non-European students is becoming one of the major challenges for science and engineering teaching in Europe. They thus decided to cooperate in order to develop exchange programmes at Masters and PhD level.

The basis of this new strategic cooperation is an aim to build an effective and attractive offer of joint degree programmes, making intra-EU mobility easier and boosting exchanges outside of Europe.
